New Horizons Un-Limited: Reaching Out to Our Community

Alverno College student computer recipient

Access Technology Initiative

Improving Computer Access, Providing Opportunity for Students

Students with disabilities can apply to the Milwaukee Public Schools for computers during their student years, but what about students with disabilities that finish school and are looking for employment or a start in life?

In an effort to serve this group, we have worked with many agencies and secondary schools in the Milwaukee area such as the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, Alverno College, and PC Pro Schools to outreach to students transitioning from school to the workforce or adulthood for a grant of a Windows XP workstation. This year we have recently outreached to the graduates of the Milwaukee Public Schools.

Through this program, we accept used computers from companies and individuals, and recycle our in-kind donations of computer equipment to people with disabilities in our community and throughout the state. The equipment is repaired by volunteer technicians many of whom are students with disabilities who have assisted this program while learning skills and gaining experience for employment. In addition, we have mentored students who are disabled in administrative skills and computer technology.

We will continue this initiative in 2010 and beyond, focusing on students with mobility impairments and injuries that result in a physical disability. If you know of a student with a disability transitioning to adulthood that could benefit by having access to a computer in their home, please contact us.
