New Horizons Un-Limited - 2013 - What's on the Horizon?
Commitment to New Opportunities, New Hope, New Horizons!
Each of us hopes for an opportunity in life, a tool like a computer to better one’s self, a job or a meaningful way to contribute to society and a chance to live a life of independence, experiences and achievement. No one wants to live isolated or alone, however, disability can leave you there. No one wants a hand-out, but any one of us may need help sometime in our lives due to disability. It is important to remember that under certain circumstances, any one of us could find ourselves disabled and needing help.
If you are looking for an organization that offers people opportunity, yet requires people to commit and invest in one’s self, then NHU is the kind of organization with which you want to be associated. We offer programs of opportunity and the tools to learn new skills and new ways to contribute to our communities. NHU has made a commitment to our members with disabilities to offer the opportunity to invest in themselves and find the next rung on their ladder through life.
Before we grant a computer through our Computer Literacy and Redistribution Program, we ask the person with a disability to invest themselves in our organization. To become a member participants can volunteer for four hours, as they are able, or pay a small fee. Participants have cleaned computers, keyboards, mice or assisted with mailers or fundraisers. Individuals are also asked to share their disability experiences, to offer solutions to others who may experience common problems. In return, they receive more than a computer work station; a one-year warranty, a subscription to Access Tech Tips, self-help in computer maintenance, and troubleshooting or project help via our Helpdesk Service.

Before we grant a computer, participants take a computer knowledge assessment. If needed, we offer training to learn basic computer skills. Participants pick up their computer equipment or if they are home bound ask a family member or friend to assist them with any part of the program. We offer computer repair with the same arrangement, investing in a membership. In this manner, we continue to offer support throughout their computer experience.
NHU is the kind of charity with which you want to be associated, to know your investment helps people find themselves. We are not just giving people the “water,” we are helping people “find the well of their life.”
