Before you post a message,
- Check out our home page categories for information and referral on our site at https://www.new-horizons.org.
- Search our site by looking on the NHU Site Plan. You can look up items by category, topic or subject.
- Visit FAQ on our site. Someone else may have asked the same question. Our FAQ section offers very specific information on many topics.
Rules of Conduct
- Keep messages meaningful - don't clutter the NHU Community Forum with single word commentary like "ugh", "ok" etc. Be expressive tell us why you agree or disagree.
- We do not mind if you need to complain or unload on the NHU Community Forum. That is important too. However, try to use constructive criticism. Ideas about solving problems will be given priority.
- Language deemed inappropriate or inappropriate use of the NHU Community Forum or repeat offenders will be screened from the board.
Privacy Issues
As the author of any postings, you will retain all rights to your submitted postings.
- No one can use your posting in any format without your permission. For additional protection assign a copyright to the bottom of your posting. See copyright under Writing Guides.
- The content of this site is an electronic resource only and will not be published in any other format or material by New Horizons Un-Limited.
- NHU will contact the author of any article it wishes to use in pertinent areas of the site such as FAQ, Personal Experiences, etc. for their permission. If NHU wishes to use any of the postings in any other format or material to provide disability awareness or fulfill the education purpose of NHU in newsletters, marketing or fundraising material, we will ask the author for permission. We will try to protect your anonymity by using only your created member name.
- Although we at NHU will try to protect your anonymity as well as we can, do not assume you are completely anonymous and can not be identified by your posts.
- Do not tell anything you do not want the world to know.
- Do not post real names, addresses and phone numbers unless you are sure you want them to be public.
- Use Internet safety when participating in the boards. People may not be telling the truth about themselves, what they know or about the organizations they claim with which to be associated.
- Check out all resources on your own.
NHU does not share, rent or sell the subscriber list to any other person or organization for any reason.
- For each visitor to the web page, the web server automatically recognizes only the visitor's domain name but not the e-mail address.
- Each visitor relinquishes e-mail address or other private information at their own risk.
- Do not assume you are completely anonymous. In case of legal obligations, NHU may have to comply to provide personal identifiable information.
Posting Tips:
- Be sure to think of a clear concise subject title for your post.
- Include your opinion, your opinion is worth something to the NHU Community.
- Include facts, but be objective and truthful.
- Do not assume you are completely anonymous and cannot be identified by your posts. Do not reveal anything you would not want the world to know. See the section on privacy issues above.
- To make posting easier, write your poems, stories, or commentaries in any software you feel comfortable. Then copy and paste your document into the appropriate discussion board post window.
- Your writings should be easy to read. Use the bold command to accentuate important thoughts, use paragraphs or bullets to separate individual ideas, and spell check your document.
- Keep to the subject and keep it short. We recommend 250-500 words.

To View an Existing Message:
- Scroll through the forum and select the topic of the discussion board you wish to view from the list. The page of this topic will appear.
- From the topic discussion board, select the subject or message you wish to view from the list.
- You do not need to be a member to view a message.
How to Reply to an Existing Message:
- To post a reply to a message you must be logged in. To log in you must register. To reply to a message or post a new message you will need to register as a member. To register as a member you must first become a member. To become a member you must send in our NHU Community Forum Membership Form. Then go to Join Now! to learn how to register.
- When you have selected a subject or posted message on a Topic Discussion Board you may reply to the message by selecting, Reply at the top of the forum. The Post Reply form will appear on your computer screen.
- On the Post Reply form, the subject will automatically fill in with the title of the original message to which you will reply.
- Select the message icon of your choice.
- Select tags and smileys as you write your reply in the message box.
- Notify of replies box. Check this box if you wish to notified of replies to this topic.
- Disable smileys box. Check this box if you will be adding code or do not like smileys.
- At the bottom of the form, you can choose the following:
- Click on the Post button to post your message.
- Click on the Preview button to preview your message.
- Click on the Reset Form button to delete and start over to reply to the message.
- If you posted your reply, you will return to the listing of your reply.
How to Notify of Replies
- If you have registered and want to recieve notification via e-mail if someone replies to a subject, you can do so by selecting, Notify of Replies on any subject or posted message on a topic.
- The Notify of Replies button appears on the top of the subject page of a forum.
- The Notify window will prompt you to answer yes or no.
- Clicking on no will return you to the subject page.
- Answering yes will automatically enter your registered valid e-mail address to the NHU Forum to send your notifications of postings on that specific subject posting.
How to Send the Subject
- While viewing subjects if you find you like a post so well that you would like to send it to a friend, you may do so by clicking on "Send the Subject" link located at the upper right or lower right corner of the post.
- A form will appear that asks for your name and e-mail address and the recipient's name and email address. Be sure to include a name that will protect your friends privacy, but be sure to include a valid e-mail address.
- Then press the send button.
- The subject post will be sent to your friend.
How to Print
- While viewing subject posts, if you like a post so well you would like to print it, you may do so by clicking the "Print" link located at the upper right or lower right corner of the post.
- A text version of the post will appear and then select the print command on your computer.
How to Reply with Quote
While viewing a subject post, if you would like to reply with a quote, you may do so by clicking the " Quote" link to the far right of the post.
- A form will appear.
- Fill in your quote.
- Add tags.
- Add smileys.
- Notify of Replies box - Check this box if you wish to be notified of replies to this subject. If you do not check this box give your posted message some time and then check back to see how the discussion is going.
- Do Not Use Smileys box - Check this box if you will be adding code or do not like smilies.
- Preview button - click on this button at the bottom of page to preview your message.
- Post - click on this button at the bottom of the page to post your message.
- Your post will appear under the subjects on the discussion board you have chosen.
Report to Moderator
- To report abusive or wrongly posted messages to the board administrator, click on this link located at the far right of each posted message.
- A form will appear requesting your comment. When finished commenting, click the submit button.
- Your comment will be sent to the board administrator.
How to Mark Subjects as Read For This Board
- While viewing subjects, you may wish to mark those that you have read. You may do so by clicking the "Mark Subjects as Read for this Board" link located above and below the list of subject posts.
- Subjects marked are revealed by scrolling down to view the subjects marked.
How to Post a New Message:
Would you like to start a new topic or discussion? Before you post your new subject, check out the following:
- Visit FAQ on our site. Someone else may have asked the same question. Our FAQ section offers very specific information on many topics.
- Return to the home page of the NHU Community Forum to check out the list of boards to see where your question would best be placed. If we feel your question belongs on another board, we may move it.
To start a new discussion, you have to post a message. Scroll through the forums and select the topic of the discussion board on which you wish to place your message.
Click on New Topic, in the appropriate boxes enter:
- Subject. (the subject of your post must be entered.)
- Choose a message icon.
- Add BBC tags.
- Add Smileys.
- Type your message in the Message box.
- Use the arrow cursers at the bottom and right of the box, to view your message in the message box.
- Add additional links if desired under:
- Notify of Replies box - Check this box if you wish to be notified of replies to this subject. If you do not check this box give your posted message some time and then check back to see how the discussion is going.
- Disable Smileys box - Check this box if you will be adding code or do not like smilies.
- Preview button - click on this button at the bottom of page to preview your message.
- Reset Form - click on this button at the bottom of the page to clear the form.
- Post - click on this button at the bottom of the page to post your message.
- Your post will appear under subjects on the discussion board you have chosen.
How to Post a New Poll
To start a new poll, you have to post a poll. Scroll through the forums and select the topic of the discussion board on which you wish to place your poll. Then select Post New Poll link located at the upper or lower right of the list of subject posts.
- A form will appear to post your new poll.
- Subject.
- Message icon.
- Question.
- Option 1 through 8.
- Add tags.
- Add Smileys.
- Add Message if necessary.
- Click on Notify of Replies if you wish to be notified of replies to this subject.
- Click on Disable smileys box if you'll be adding code (or do not like smilies.)
- Post - click on this button at the bottom of the page to post your poll.
- Reset Form - click on this button at the bottom of the page to clear the form.
