This editorial attempts to define not only how housing for people with disabilities is unavailable, inaccessible and unaffordable but also explores what individuals, disability organizations and advocates, Centers for Independent Living, housing authorities, lenders and legislators are doing about it and, most importantly, what you can do about it.

New Legislation Makes It Easier for Homeownership to be a Housing Option for People with Disabilities

New legislation and the final regulation from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) allow people with disabilities to use Section 8 vouchers that pay rent to apply instead to buy a house and pay monthly mortgage payments. Local public housing authorities have to choose to participate in the program and there are eligibility requirements, but this is an important change and offers homeownership as a housing option for people with disabilities.
