Hospital and External Patient Advocates

Hospital-based patient advocates are usually your first and, in most cases, the only advocates you need when you feel a need to escalate concerns or issues. Their main goals are to listen, provide answers, address complaints, and serve as a liaison between doctors, nurses, staff, billing departments, and other hospital services.

If an issue can be handled directly with a first party (doctor or nurse), that is often best. Many problems are resolved without escalation by maintaining good working relationships and not "going over people's heads" immediately. "You get more when you're nice."

You also have the option of using an external advocate. This is usually appropriate as a last resort, especially when there is evidence of serious wrong doing or when dealing with complex, unresolved problems.

  • Many specialize in:
    • Disability advocacy
    • Elder Care
    • Hospital Safety
    • Complex or rare medical conditions
