Education / Share a great Education resource
« on: December 14, 2004, 10:34:40 AM »
Please understand that there are many individuals that may be experiencing similar circumstances as you. Each of you may know of a resource that may help others work out solutions to their problems and questions. Please SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE of a great  Education resource whether it is a great website, school, program, scholarship program or book, so that everyone in the NHU Community may benefit. If each person would take a little and each person would give a little, the collective sharing of knowledge would make a significant difference for all of us.

Visit our NHU resources page on our website for more on Education

Has a community organization assisted you in providing or locating programs and services? Do you receive a favorite newsletter from a local organization?  If you do, please let us know so we may let others know what organizations are providing.  Post a resource here, or e-mail us at communityfriend@new-horizons.org.

Thanks for your assistance! :)

Do you visit a senior center that is open for use by younger individuals with disabilities?  If you do, please send us an e-mail at communityfriend@new-horizons.org.  We would like to make people more aware of alternative options in their communities.

Thanks for your assistance.

Adaptive Technology / Assistive Technology for Students
« on: December 14, 2004, 10:14:16 AM »
According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), assistive technology (devices & services) is to be provided at no cost to the parent. Are disabled students and parents receiving the appropriate services and devices? Are the states, public school systems, and other agencies providing these adequately? What is the standard for receiving assistive technology and does it need to be improved?

Housing / Assisted Living
« on: December 14, 2004, 10:11:10 AM »
Do you know of an assisted living facility for young disabled adults.  The young disabled adult may find a group home or independent living in an apartment, but if one needs more assistance the only option may be a nursing home.  The need for a secure assisted living environment is ignored for the younger adult who has had less opportunity and cannot draw on experiences of a lifetime as seniors.  If you know of an assisted living program in your community, please contact horizons@new-horizons.org  Your ideas, resources, experiences, or solutions will help to benefit others.

Thanks for your assistance

Adaptive Technology / Home and Cellular Emergency Phones
« on: December 13, 2004, 12:43:55 PM »
I found this site that has two really easy to use cell phones. One is just for calling 911 (it has one big button). Mobile911 offers easy, rapid access to 911 wherever you go.  The other one, MobilePAL, has three large buttons - one for 911, one for roadside assistance and the third button gets you to a special operator who has a list of frequently called numbers that you can ask for by name. If you have the password they will call any number you give them.

Community / To find or start a support group
« on: December 13, 2004, 12:31:02 PM »
For help in finding or forming a no-fee self-help support group the non-profit American Self-Help Group Clearinghouse provides a keyword-searchable database of over 1,100 national, online, and model "self-help" support groups at:
http://www.selfhelpgroups.org (click on American).

Search this database for national, international, online, and model "self-help"
support groups for any specific illness, disability,
addiction, bereavement situation, parenting, caregiver
concern, abuse, or other stressful life situation; a
listing of local non-profit self-help group clearinghouses
worldwide; suggestions for starting both community and
online groups, summaries of research studies; and a
registry for those Americans trying to start new national
or international support groups that don't yet exist in the
world.
